Working on some of Boston's signature spots always gives us a special feeling of pride. So when the Friends of Post Office Square selected Metro Sign & Awning to design, fabricate, and install new wayfinding signage inside, we knew it would be a great project.
In the heart of the financial district, directly underneath Norman B. Leventhal Park, the full-service parking facility has been called "Boston's nicest garage in terms of service and quality."
The award-winning facility, open 24 hours a day, is all about going green - so from the outset, the plan called for replacing the existing neon signs with LEDs that use far less energy.
Green, Modern, Universal, and Useful New Signage
Replacing the existing neon signs with more efficient LEDs was important to Garage at Post Office Square, and the driving factor was the fact that the LEDs would use less energy. However, the cost-savings was appreciated too. The new signs will cost less because they’ll consume less energy, and also because they will require less maintenance and fewer repairs.
In the first phase of the project, Metro installed LED light bars and push-thru illuminated cabinets to identify the elevator vestibules on each of the garage’s seven floors. More recently, Metro installed and added wayfinding signage to make Garage at Post Office Square even more convenient and easy-to-use for its patrons.
The more modern sign designs use universal symbols and familiar conventions so the signage is clearer and intuitive for guests and visitors.
Wayfinding Scope and Installation
The project included replacing about 50 signs at elevators, emergency phones, and contact points.
Because the Garage is open 24 hours a day, every day, the Metro Sign & Awning team arranged to install the signage on low traffic-count days. Project Manager Adam Brodeur noted, “the client was very accommodating, blocking off spaces as needed,” but above all took care not to inconvenience patrons.
As the landmark facility continues to enhance its services, the Metro team looks forward to more projects with Garage at Post Office Square.
