Dynatrace is a global software company that celebrated its IPO in 2019. At their corporate headquarters in Waltham, MA, the team is known for having a love of sports. So, at the start of a new phase of their growth as a company, Dynatrace decided to jazz up their headquarters with sports-themed decor that the team would enjoy seeing every day. In collaboration with Dynatrace’s marketing team, Metro Sign & Awning designer, Matt Morgenson, created 13 larger-than-life sports graphics designs for the interiors of the office’s 13 meeting rooms. Now, Dynatrace has great reference names for scheduling the rooms and a beautiful, award-winning custom environment for the staff.

Project Overview

The birthplace and original headquarters of Wang Computers, The Center at Innovation Drive, is now a 750,000-square-foot mixed-use development that includes laboratory space, R&D space, offices, warehousing, and lifestyle amenities such as a fitness center, doggie daycare, and a fleet of rental bikes. In 2015, The Center commissioned Metro Sign and Awning to create an internally illuminated sign that would welcome visitors and employees in a new way, reimagining the space’s exterior branding and presence. In collaboration with developer Newmark Grubb Knight Frank and our experienced architectural designer, Susan MacGregor, we created an innovative design featuring push-through graphics and a CorTen steel base that will look even better as it ages. Both the top green portion and the lettering illuminate “from within,” making the sign high visible and noticeable. Being somewhat outside of the box, this project required a variance (Special Sign Permit) from the Planning Board, which was easily approved well ahead of installation.

Project Overview

Specializing in diamond jewelry, Marcou Jewelers has been family owned for more than 50 years and is now operated by the founders’ children and family members in three Massachusetts locations: Waltham, Watertown, and Belmont. The family came to us with a challenge: Can we make a blade sign shine like a diamond? Our answer was yes, we can. For this unique and fun project, our designers and fabricators created a floating diamond that mimics the look of the real thing. As a result, Metro Sign & Awning won first place in the United States Sign Design Council’s 2016 prestigious run of awards.

Donald MacLaren Sr. and his son are lifelong bowlers who wanted to bring an entertainment venture to their hometown of Tewksbury, MA—and in 2015, they realized this dream with the grand opening of Wamesit Lanes. In collaboration with the Wamesit design team, the Metro Sign & Awning team designed and fabricated exterior and interior signage for the building and bowling alley, including the exterior Pylon LED digital sign that won the 2016 Watchfire LED sign award. Although LED signs are not always immediately approved by zoning officials, Metro has a portfolio of existing signage and the requisite expertise to overcome many city objections. The result is winning signage for businesses and communities.

Gold Watchfire LED Sign Award, 2016

Services Provided

  • Exterior jumbo electronic message sign
  • Wayfinding sign
  • Free-standing entry sign
  • Re-branding of a shopping center, including pylon modification

Project Overview

This signage project, for the re-branding of The Crossings shopping center, was two years in the making. It involved a series of meetings with the Planning and Zoning Boards, which culminated in a night-meeting/hearing process during which Metro Sign & Awning presented the details of signs’ location, size, and illumination. We even demonstrated some illumination and digital sign components for the Boards’ approval. Following this approval process, we created and installed the signage throughout the center. The project came with various challenges—materials, time, budget, and so forth—but perhaps the biggest challenge came on the morning of the scheduled installation when the EF-2 tornado touched down in Revere. Severe weather reports were blasting across the news stations, but our installers were unfazed and wanted to go for it despite heavy downpours. The result was an on-time re-brand with signage that The Crossings’ team was proud to display, including an award-winning LED message sign.

In 2020, The Charles River Museum will celebrate 40 years as a touchstone of New England’s industrial heritage. The managing team, Downtown Waltham Partnership, asked us to revitalize the museum’s external appearance with a unique sign that would highlight the museum’s historical nature. Once we stepped inside, we found our inspiration: The museum’s strong focus on nineteenth-century machines. We then asked our fabricators, Tim Goguen and Peter Nolan, to make the sign top into a replica of one of the museum’s many machine gears. The 91-by-48-inch sign is a double-sided framed aluminum blade with a changeable panel insert.

Boston Society of Architects Hospitality Design Award, 2018

Services Provided

  • Collaborative design
  • Exterior building sign
  • Blade sign
  • Interior and exterior graphics

Project Overview

In collaboration with the design firm Hacin + Associates and the independent restaurant team at the Briar Group, Metro Sign & Awning designed and fabricated signage for the grand opening of a restaurant called Glass House. The designers’ vision of bold, modern, upscale branding called for a unique exterior blade sign with a convex circular shape, larger-than-life graphics for the restaurant’s glass exterior, and playful but refined interior graphics. The result of this collaboration was a truly one-of-a-kind atmosphere. According to the Boston Society of Architects, “From the crafting of small details to the curation of a complete atmosphere, every design decision in this project is anchored in the neighborhood’s history of glass-making, riffing on it through materiality, palette, graphics, and compartmentalization of space. More restaurants should be so clever, spirited, and cohesive. Glass House is a singular establishment.”
