Keeping Pedestrians Safe at Fitchburg State – Higher Education Series Post 1

ADA, Colleges and Universities, Customer Spotlight, Electronic Message Centers (EMC), Metro Sign & Awning, Original Posts, Wayfinding

One of the colleges with whom Metro Sign has worked is Fitchburg State — a client for over three years. Some of the college’s first projects included adding need-based interior photopolymer Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) signs. This initial opportunity led to additional signage projects including wayfinding, monument signs, directories, building identification, and award displays.

One important job included the addition of flashing pedestrian signs at crosswalks. College administrators worried that vehicles failed to slow down when students and faculty entered the crosswalks, which could cause a hazardous situation.

To keep both vehicle and foot traffic safe, Metro Sign installed environmentally-friendly new pedestrian signs with flashers activated by the press of a button. These solar-powered lights flash visibly to vehicles driving in both directions. Our team also installed pulsing solar stop signs at the four-way intersection in the center of campus.

Another project incorporated an LED electronic message center (EMC) into the new pylon sign at the Recreation Center. Fitchburg State uses this sign to promote campus events, broadcast notices and emergency information, recognize student achievements and update sports results. This new pylon has become a key focal point of the new landscape at the Recreation Center. This cheerful freestanding sign welcomes staff, students, and visitors with branding that matches the campus look and ties into the gateway signs where the Leominster line reaches Fitchburg.

During a project to remodel a number of classroom and lab buildings, Metro Sign added and updated ADA compliant signs to meet building code. We relocated, cleaned, and made a new mounting pattern, and re-used waterjet dimensional letters for the Student Service Center in addition to fabricating and installing a new set for Thompson Hall.

But we don’t just design and install signs! We also install high quality sewn banners and to help the college celebrate its 125th anniversary effectively and economically, we mounted new Sunbrella fabric banners featuring the school logo onto light posts that run along the primary roads throughout campus. These banners complement the existing FSU banners and provide an eye-catching look to draw attention to the momentous anniversary.

Metro Sign’s track record of providing premium signage solutions, prompt and personalized service, and expert sign design and installation has made Metro a reliable resource for life in higher education for schools that want a partner who champions innovation and supports progress.
