Boston City Council Discusses Sidewalk Signs

The Boston City Council has a Special Committee on “Small Business, Entrepreneurship & Innovation.” This Committee is going to take testimony and deliberate about regulations concerning free-standing sidewalk signs in our fair city. The date: July 23, 2015. The time: 2:00 pm. The location: City Council Chambers. One reason for the hearing is the profusion of new, old, and conflicting regulations that can be applied to these free-standing sidewalk signs. The current City of Boston zoning codes have different standards for different neighborhoods, as well as for various business districts and even for some of the sub-districts within those areas. Once your business gets a ticket for having an “illegal” sidewalk sign, you tend to get interested in the topic.

Channel Letter Signs Offer Many Advantages

Channel letters are among the most common signs we make, and for good reason. They are cost effective, easily shaped, extremely vivid (when designed well), and long lasting. Here are a few facts you probably don’t know about channel letter signage: 1. Because of the innate flexibility of channel letter fabrication, these three-dimensional signs can be made in almost any font or graphical shape, in almost any size, color and style. The major limitation on channel letter signage tends to be local zoning codes and other regulations. 2. Channel letters displayed against a solid color background can be seen and recognized from great distances. One common guideline is to size the letters 1.5 inches high for every 25 feet you

Improving Retail Signage

Retail sales depend greatly on giving prospective customers a clear idea of what you’re selling, and then making it fast and easy for them to get what they want, when they want it. That’s why retail stores often live (or die) on the quality of their signage. Whether you are running a “Mom and Pop” sandwich shop or coordinating brand and local signage for a regional chain, here are some simple suggestions to help you open a new store, or improve the signage in any retail operation: Keep Your Signs Looking New In most retail situations, nothing turns off potential customers more quickly and permanently than the feeling your store is old, out of date, or dirty. Your signage serves

FedEx Survey Finds Signage Powerful

Federal Express is both a well known brand and a highly successful company. So when it says there’s a solid and important connection between good signage and consumers’ decisions about whether or not to visit your store and make a purchase, it’s probably a good idea to listen. FedEx’s classic survey, called “What’s Your Sign?,” measured the power of signage to attract people and influence their buying behavior. Its results underline the potential for small businesses to find new customers and increase their sales and profitability by means of effective signs. According to the survey: More than half of consumers will hold back from giving a retail store a try when its signage doesn’t measure up, particularly if it contains

53 State Street, Part 1: Design & Fabrication

The Right Sign, Right on Time  Built in 1985, the towering 53 State Street building is tied with neighboring 60 State Street as Boston’s 12th tallest building. With tenants on all 40 floors, it’s a busy place. And since it’s in the heart of Boston’s financial district, there’s traffic all around. Our challenge: to make the signs pop for drivers and pedestrians, in spite of all the hubbub surrounding the iconic skyscraper; to make sure the interior signage was brilliant enough to match the exterior image; and to ensure the sign installation not only complied with all city codes and safety standards, but that it didn’t create a snag for the considerable weekday traffic. Oh, and the installation had to

Signs and Advertising ROI

Signs can serve many purposes. Some give direction, others warn of potential dangers, but most let the world know you’re in business.  In other words, they’re advertising, and I’m always surprised when our clients don’t consider them as such. Typically, a sign will be up for 5-10 years before the business owner wants to update it. (Of course I have to point out that our signs are built to last much longer!) Their longevity alone makes signs a unique form of advertising – one with excellent return on investment (ROI). Whether it’s illuminated or not, an exterior sign’s cost-per-impression compares very favorably to other forms of advertising. Think about newspaper, TV, radio, Yellow Pages, and online advertising. How many people
